Oophaga vicentei X Oophaga pumilio
2009-2012
Living hybrid frog
Open call at Art Lab, Atalante in Gothenburg 2011.
Material: Bio-art
The animal is a cross between species Oophaga vicentei and Oophaga pumilio I bred in order to develop a broader understanding of how the hybrid animal is categorized in a biological context. An addition, the project led to a collaboration with the organization In-Betweenship and The Multi-Cultural Center in Stockholm, where the hybrid frog was used as a metaphor in a debate about cultural hybridity and the in-between.
The work / frog was exhibited at The Swedish Museum of Natural History (2010),The Multicultural Center in Fittja (2010) and Aquaria Watermuseum in Stock- holm (2011). A video of the frog has also been shown in the FIA International Art Festival in Fittja (2011) and at the exhibition “Hidden Cities & Hybrid Identi- ties” in Rome, Italiy (2012), organized by International Art Expo. Reflections on how the project connects to my own personal background, cultural hybridity and postcolonial history is presented in the essay “On the Origin Of Oophaga vicentei x Oophaga pumilio“.
